An engineering study (The New Haven Harbor Access Study) has
been completed for I-95 between Canal Dock Road and Interchange
45 (Route 10) in the Long
Wharf/Sargent Drive area.

The study addressed various I-95 roadway configurations and improved
Interchange 46 configurations that are compatible with the I-95/I-91/Route
34 Interchange design included in the I-95 NHHC Corridor Improvement
Program. The study also assessed measures to improve pedestrian
and vehicle access to the New Haven Harbor waterfront at Long
Wharf Park and Bayview Park.
Three alternatives were developed, including the depression of
I-95 through that area, elevation of the roadway, and widening
I-95 at its current location (“at grade”). Each alternative
includes the addition of one travel lane in each direction and
full inside and outside shoulders. The “at grade”
alternative is being studied further through a separate environmental
evaluation, the Long
Wharf Environmental Assessment, currently underway.
