The Annex: The part of New Haven east
of the Quinnipiac River, known as the Annex, is a mixture of commercial,
residential and industrial properties. Moving east away from the
shoreline, Forbes Avenue and the I-95 corridor, the Annex becomes
more commercial with a scattering of light industrial and institutional
uses. The rest of the Annex is predominantly residential with
a mix of single and multi-family housing. Publicly-owned properties
include the Woodward Elementary School, Peat Meadow Park, Fort
Wooster Park and a U.S. Postal Service office and distribution
center. The City of New Haven also owns a wide strip of vacant
land in this area that was set aside at one time for future use
as a park, but remains unused. A U.S. Postal Service office/distribution
center is located at the eastern edge of the Annex, at the East
Haven town line.
IMPACTS: Improvements were designed to stimulate redevelopment for industrial and commercial uses, to reduce industrial traffic and improve emergency vehicle traffic.
The Woodward Avenue and Stiles Street ramps have been reconfigured, a new frontage road was built at the western end of the Annex, and access to Route 1 was eliminated at Minott Street. The Woodward and Forbes Avenue Bridges were replaced in 2007. Townsend Avenue Bridge is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in early 2008. The Woodward School was demolished, and the City of New Haven has moved students and staff to other area schools.
